What a great day! Our provincial championships was held in -21 degree weather, but the sizeable crowd kept the athletes pumped and ready to push. Thank you everyone for braving the cold to support the athletes. It was a very close race for first place in the men's category. Derek van den Brink and Nick Martin were just edged out by the mixed team of Jess Hansen and Zack McEachern. In third place was the team of Rolandu Isidro and Jerby Deriada. The women's division was won by Taylor Rooke and Emily Pickett. Congratulations to all of our competitors, and thank you for a great season.
Tonight was the third race of the Alberta Cup series. We were going for consistency in this one. The first place team of Heath Spence and Chase Osiowy had only .11 of a second between the first and second runs. Second place was Taylor Rooke and Emily Pickett with .22 between the runs. Derek van den Brink and Nick Martin took third with a difference of .35 seconds. Thanks everyone for making it a fun event.
Some great results in our second of three Alberta Cup races. We were joined by two Korean sleds to further push our local sliders. The fast starting team of Jin Su Kim and Dae Hwan Kim took the top spot in the race, followed by Taylor Rooke (the only woman in the race) and her brakeman Zack McEachern. Rounding out the top three was Derek van den Brink with brakeman Nick Martin. Well done everyone.
If you would like to come out and try our exciting sport, there are many ways to get started.
Firstly, we have summer training in our Ice House facility at Canada Olympic Park. Here is where the best in the world learn how to push a sled fast. Canada has some of the top push athletes thanks to this world class facility. Alberta Bobsleigh has sessions twice a week throughout the summer, with guidance from our knowledgeable coaching staff. Check out our website calendar to find out when our "Learn to Push" camps start.
We will be having our first Learn to Push sessions of the summer season on July 4th and July 8th. After learning the proper technique, you can train with all of our athletes in our regular sessions throughout the summer. Check out our website calendar for times. Here is what you need to know:
- come earlier to warm up so you are ready to go by start time
- wear sweatpants/tights (no shorts) as it is cool in the Ice House
- we will provide helmets and ice spikes (shoes to run on ice)
- $10 per session or $150 for the whole summer!
Huge congratulations from everyone at Alberta Bobsleigh to the Canadian gold medal winners Justin Kripps and Alexander Kopacz in the Olympic 2man race. All of our men's teams placed really well in a large and competitive field. Nick Poloniato and Jesse Lumsden placed 7th and Chris Spring with Lascelles Brown in 10th. Three sleds in the top ten at the Olympics is a major win.
Congratulations to the winners of the men's and women's Provincial Championship races this weekend. The 2man team of Taylor Austin and DJ McClelland took 1st on the men's side and a big win for Taylor Rooke and Andrea Kotyk in the women's race. Thank you to all the Alberta and Canadian athletes and to team China for making this a very enjoyable race.
After a 4th place finish in Saturday's 2man North America's Cup race in Whistler BC, Taylor Austin and Ryan Sommer took the gold in today's race. Congratulations on the big win and we wish you all the best in the 4man races. The Calgary NAC races are the next on the calendar. We will have more Alberta athletes competing here on their home track.
This Sunday, October 29th, we will have another "learn to push" session in the Ice House at Canada Olympic Park. The session will start at 2pm for beginners to get some extra instruction.
Join us on September 17th, directly following the ABA Push Competition (at approximately 4:30pm) for our Annual General Meeting and BBQ. This will be held at the ABA sled shed, near the finish dock. More info will be sent via email to all members.
